MHTU Stream Cleanups
11/9/24: MHTU Veterans Day Stream Cleanup
On Saturday, November 9th, members of the MHTU chapter participated in a Veterans Day of Service, cleaning several areas along the Wappingers Creek, including Greenvale Park, Creekside Park, the “hot dog stand” area in Pleasant Valley, and ending at the Veterans Memorial near the dam in Pleasant Valley.
Thanks to Clark, Bill, Pat, Dan, and Mike for their efforts. A total of 6 bags of garbage, weighing approximately 130 lbs., was collected.
2024 Riverkeeper Sweep: May 4, 2024
Members of the Mid-Hudson Chapter of Trout Unlimited and other volunteers cleaned up three sections of the Wappingers Creek and one on the Fishkill Creek on Saturday, May 4, 2024 as part of the annual Riverkeeper Sweep.
Here's the totals for the four cleanup Sites:
1) Results: Wappingers Creek - Pleasant Valley, NY - Team Leader: Mike Matts
· TOTAL VOLUNTEERS: 6 (all adults)
· Large bags of trash (best 30 lbs): 3
. Small bags of trash (est 15 lbs): 1
· Bags of recycling (est 15lbs): 1
· Total Weight Collected: = 185 lbs. (includes 65# of other debris (tile drains))
2) Results: Wappingers Creek - Manchester Bridge - Team Leader: Dan Swart
· TOTAL VOLUNTEERS: 2 (all adults)
· Big bags of trash (est 30lbs): 1
· Total Weight Collected: = 30 lbs.
3) Results: Fishkill Creek - Route 52/ 82 Intersection, Fishkill, NY - Team Leader: Bill Rooney
· TOTAL VOLUNTEERS: 7 (all adults)
· Large bags of trash (est 15 lbs): 6
· Tires (est 20 lbs): 2
. Total Weight Collected = 270 lbs. (includes 50# - mattress, plastic sheets)
4) Results: Wappingers Creek - Jameson Hill Rd, Clinton Corners - Team Leader: Kevin Miller
· TOTAL VOLUNTEERS : 3 (all adults)
· Big bags of trash (est 30lbs): 1
· Small bags of trash (est 15lbs): 1
. Total Weight Collected = 45 lbs.
Total: 2024 Sweep VOLUNTEERS: 18 GARBAGE COLLECTED: 530 lbs.

MHTU Ten Mile & Wells Brook Stream Cleanup - 4/14/24

Estimate: 16 bags x 20# each = 320 lbs + Other debris (Bike, Tire, etc) 90# = 410 lbs

Estimate: 20 bags x 20# each = 400 lbs + Other debris 80# = 480 lbs
On Saturday, April 14th, 14 volunteers cleaned up several locations on Wells Brook in Dover Plains and several more locations on the Ten Mile River in Wingdale. The volunteers came from both MHTU (Thanks Andrew, Pat, Jerry, Mike B., David, Brittney, Luis, Clark, April, Bill and Mike M.) and Housatonic Valley Association - HVA (Thanks Claire, Stuart, and Louise).
The streams looked much better after the cleanup was completed and two large piles of garbage were picked up by the Dover Highway Department.

Thanks to those who attended the stream cleanup. Five locations along the Wappingers Creek were cleaned up on a cool, crisp morning. Eight bags of garbage, estimated to be about 150 lbs in weight, were removed from Cady Recreation Park, the “hot dog stand” parking lot, Veterans Park, Hibernia Road, and Hurley Road. 2020: 13 volunteers picked up 720 lbs. of trash/ recycleables at 3 locations on the
Wappingers Creek.
That’s a three year total of 2160 lbs!!!
