April Fly of the Month: Stonefly Nymph

Part of the appeal of FOTM is combining creativity and occasionally a challenge. So to increase the challenge a little I chose a pattern that I must confess I have tied very few of.

This month will be stonefly nymphs. There are many different options, in many different colors. Tie some up and bring them in!

Stoneflies are among the oldest orders of insects on the planet. All their life is spent in and around water and that makes them an obvious prey to many fish species such as brown trout, rainbow trout and char. They are among the first large insects to hatch in the season. To the fly fisherman the nymphs are most important.

NOTE: At monthly chapter meetings we feature a "Fly of the Month" and everyone is encouraged to participate.  

Tie and bring to the meeting two or more of the "Fly of the Month" and you will receive a raffle ticket for each fly.  Those who have not tied a fly for the raffle can purchase tickets for a dollar apiece.  The winning ticket gets half of all the flies.  The other flies are retained by the chapter.
